The following is a list of the known galaxy, basic star charts every good officer of Starfleet should have and know. And here is a little refresher course: We learned from The Q Continuum, the Milky Way is approximately thirteen billion years old and 100,000 light-years across, 15,000 light-years deep at the galactic core and contains approximately 500,000 stars which orbit the galactic core over a period of around 220 million years. Somewhat unusually the Galaxy is enveloped in an energy field known as the galactic barrier. A similar field, the Great Barrier encloses much of the Galactic Core. Both fields were created by the to protect the Galaxy from a gang of powerful malicious beings.
The most widely used cartographic system (the science and practice of making maps and projections of space) is based on older Earth and Vulcan systems, and perhaps ones even older than those. It divides the galaxy into quadrants and sectors, and also uses coordinates to describe specific points in space.

Hi folks, now that our "universe" is expanding and the federation is moving out. I took the liberty to try and find data on galaxies, how close they are to the milky way and how many light years away they are etc.
Unfortunately being that there isnt much sci-fi data to go on, and no "star charts" as such. I´ve gotten real data from wikipedia.
It would be alot to copy and paste directly here so Im going to post some link.
In hope it will give good story ideas and help with mission creations.
First link is a list of galaxies closest to us.

You may be surprised to find out as I just did, that the sci-fi stargate, Pegasus galaxy, technically doesnt exist, its actually a satellite of Andromeda Galaxy haha, who would have thought.
So in a sense it does exist and several variations of it, but its part of a much larger group. Just like the moon is a satellite of earth, Pegasus is a satellite galaxy of the much larger Andromeda.
Anyway this data isnt totally set in stone for our stories, feel free to make things up, this is just here if you get writers block, and so there is a common frame of reference.

What is this all about galactic core, in every galaxy's center there is supermassive black hole, and not some galactic core, and if you dont believe me then check out this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermassive_black_hole .  |

Hi Captain, I believe it to be true of some galaxies, not all, however, everything has depth, width and length, otherwise it wouldnt be 3 dimentional. Its basically saying that its deepest point is 15,000 lightyears.
But dont forget alot of it was science fiction from as early as the late 1960´s.
And the charts are federation star charts.
I´ve included my self, details of other galaxies from a more accurate non-sci-fi source. But those details may also be incorrect as they are written "infact" to our extent of knowledge. which means anything is open to change or debate.
Imagine looking outward in one direction, from your perspective you can see everything, and understand everything from your point of view. However someone else standing at the far opposite end, looking back, may be able to see something clouded from your outward vision. Then we get into 3d, that opposite person may be at a slight angle in comparrison and be able to see things we couldnt.
All very complicated.
Thanx for the question and debate, but dont worry too much about details, remember this is roleplay fun, and to make it up as you go along and have fun.
